Celebrating Moms Today


It is Mother’s Day!

Today is a special day, a day when we celebrate our moms.

Whether your mom is alive or she has passed, celebrate her today for without her, you would not be here. Here are some quick thoughts I have on motherhood.

Motherhood is…

  • Loves you beyond imagination
  • Dries the tears of the boo-boos to the broken hearts
  • Stands guard without being seen
  • Is supportive beyond the words you know to speak
  • Advocates for you until she wins the battle
  • Educates you to success (without giving up)
  • Holds your hand through all the pains to the successes of life
  • Cries behind closed doors
  • Shows constant perseverance through exhaustion and endless energy

These are just some of the things that come to mind when I think about what motherhood is and if I were to describe what it means to me.

My friend, many of you have been blessed to know and love a mom who has these traits, while I am also aware many have not. To those who have a beautiful and loving mother, cherish her and show her how she has touched your life in a meaningful way. Those words will be better than any bouquet of flowers or gift you could give her.

To those whose mom is no longer here, hugs to you for the pain and void you may have in your heart today. Cherish your memories and hold them close to your heart.

To those whose mom was not all, she should have been or could be, know moms are not perfect. They make mistakes that sometimes hold irreversible effects, but today is a day that maybe you could seek wisdom to see through the pain and forgive her for the absence she left in your heart. Hugs to you as well, as the pain you feel is real and runs deep within you. Consider reaching down into your heart for just today (if this is all you are able to do) and love her for being your mom and for giving birth to you. It will help to heal the brokenness of your heart.

Mother’s Day is a day where depending on your relationship can be either a joyous day or a day of deep sorrow, but no matter how you feel, your mom was still your mom and if you are able to see her for that, then celebrate her for that today.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you who are moms!! It is my deepest and sincerest prayer your day is a special one and you feel equally special as well.

God Always Comforts Those Who Isolate and To Those Who Help

God is holding each one of you up and is providing for each and every need you have.

 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:3-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Allow Him into your heart to meet your deepest and darkest needs, do not isolate from Him.

I know many of us when we feel overwhelmed by the needs and confusion of life, have a tendency to retract into our “safe” personal space so we can process all that has us consumed, but do not shut the door on God while you decompress in isolation.

My Friend, please remember He loves you and even though you may be hiding, He sees you still and is holding your hand while drying your hidden tears. Allow Him access to your heavy heart so He can provide you the strength and peace to all you are harboring. Allow Him to provide clarity to your confusion, your distraction, your hurt, and your pain and know by doing this you will find the peace and strength He has to offer you.

To those who are providing comfort to others, turn the weight of your heavy heart over to God as well. He knows what you are carrying while you are helping others in your life. If you allow God to carry the weight, it will allow you the ability to stay focused and light-hearted and will enable you to stay engaged with the people you are trying to help through the loving, caring, compassion, and encouragement you are trying to provide.

In closing, I am here to provide a simple reminder that no matter what you are going through or who you may be trying to help, God is always there to provide comfort for each and every one of you. 

If you need peace, strength, or comfort, allow Him access to your heart and your life today.

Take the time to allow God full access to your life.

Sharing My God Revealing Moment

Today’s encouragement is coming in the form of a lesson God showed me this morning  and will be followed by a challenge.

Have you ever taken the time to truly think about who God is? I know many of you will say yes, but I mean truly took time to ponder deep down inside who He really is? If you were asked to describe Him, what words would you choose?

As I was doing my morning devotion I stumbled on these verses and found I needed to I read and reread this passage over and over again. I completely understand God is a God of hope, strength, peace, and comfort as well as many more, but these verses jumped out at me and I decided to share them with you as well. It is my prayer they touch your heart as they have touched mine.

Read this passage and see what you think? Do you see God as a God of “action” like I did.

I have underlined the action words to allow you the ability to see what jumped out at me this morning.

“Your loveLord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep.
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
    you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

Continue your love to those who know you,
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.”  

Psalm 36: 5-10 NIV

These are all words we know describes our Heavenly Father, but there is something about seeing them written in one place together that makes them awesome and awe striking to me today.

We know we have a God who is a person of action. He is “always” with us and meeting our every need twenty-four hours a day, crisis after crisis, need after need, as well as celebrating joy after joy, but still… these verses just ring true to me.

There are no limits to His provisions for us. They are immeasurable. Think about His unfailing “love” and “faithfulness” that reaches the Heavens and the skies. My friend, when you look at these words there is something magnificent here. We are incapable of doing this in our human form. We may love people, but not with this kind of love. We are incapable of this, but God is not.

Now think about His righteousness and justice for a moment. I am so thankful it comes in abundance as I mess up so much in my daily life. It would take a lot of patience for Him to accept me as well as offer me so graciously His righteousness and justice. Thankfully He doesn’t judge me as man does. I will graciously accept his righteousness and justice any day.

My friend, God’s “love” is unfailing.He loves each and every one of us despite our failures, faults and stubbornness. He meets all our needs even through we may not be willing to see them. I know I am guilty of this. When I am at my weakest I can easily forget, but God gently reminds me He is a God of love and will provide for my every need. He shows me by using His creatures as examples. God will show me a pair of doves or a majestic butterfly. He will put a pair of geese along my travels to show me if He meets the needs of these creatures, how much more does He love me and will meet my needs. He brings forth the provisions I am in need of every time.

“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

Matthew 6:26 NKJV

God provides for all of His people and His creatures, however I can completely understand how difficult it is to see. Through the past couple of years we have experienced great hardships and God has used these hardships to soften my heart and to show me how weak I am and how incapable to fully trust anyone, including Him at times. Trust in Him my friend, He never lets you down. Allow Him to bless you with the provisions you are in need of just as He does for me.

Take refuge under His wings if you are walking through the murky and muddy waters of life. Allow God to provide abundantly for your needs while you are seeking shelter from the storm. Allow Him to shield you and love you while you breathe and get warm. Our God is strong and mighty enough to do this for you, if you allow Him too.

“He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”

Psalm 91:4 NKJV 

My friend, allow God to refresh your hunger and thirst. He has the provisions and is just waiting for you to seek Him. Go to His house and knock on the door.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

Revelations 3:20 NKJV

He promises to let you in if we only ask. Take shelter my friend; rest, restore, and regain your strength with His promises. When you do, you will see this amazing light shine through Him. Allow His rays to permeate into your soul so others will see His light shine through you,

As I said earlier, when I read the initial verses out of Psalm, it left me awe-struck and amazed by His wonderment. I know He is capable of doing all of this, but when the writer of Psalms put it all together like this, it became even more powerful and magnificent.

My friend, your challenge today is to truly seek God and ask Him to share His amazing blessings with you. If you find yourself in a turbulent time ask Him to meet these needs for you. He promises to do so and when He does, it will renew your hope in Him and in a brighter future.

Touching Lives Creates Treasured Moments

Today’s challenge is to seek out a reason to make someone feel special.

It is easy enough to do whether you do something unexpected for a family member or a total stranger off the street. God wants us to love, respect, and appreciate others. He believes this so strongly He commands us to love others as we love ourselves.

I am aware this is not easy to do as there are a lot of people who are less than nice, but it doesn’t matter, God’s commands are clear. We are to love one another.

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12 NIV

God loved us enough to send His Son for everyone of us, whether we love Him or we dislike Him.

Think about that for a moment. For those of you who have children, can you imagine crucifying your child for the love of others to include those who do not like you? Think about the rude person you met in traffic, the rude person you work with, or the impatient customer you ran into at the grocery store. Can you imagine crucifying your child, even for them, if it means showing your ultimate love for someone else?

Wake up call here, God did. He created His Son for the soul purpose to save us as sinners from our own lives.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV

Take time this weekend to reach out and touch the life of someone making them feel like they are special and are loved.

I can tell you from my own personal experience, for the people who have done this for me, I will never forget. I will hold their deed or generosity close and dear to my heart.

You will make a difference and one that will not be forgotten.

They have a way of transforming people’s lives.

Do not underestimate the impact you are having on others if you are being honest, kind, and loving.

Be “real” with your friends and relatives and when you are not around any more, they will forever love and miss you.

Today’s challenge is to think outside the box and do something special to brighten someone’s day.

It is a double win. It makes the person you are doing something for feel good, but it will brighten your day as well.

I have discovered over time there is power to brighten a day in a simple vase of flowers, a dozen donuts, a batch of homemade brownies or a simple hand written note.

Honestly, people don’t care what you do for them they just wanted to know they were thought of and cared about at that moment.

For some it may be a lasting memory if you touched their heart at just the right time.

Follow your heart and let God instruct you in who needs to be touched by your little gesture of love and kindness.

God’s Love Is Greatest of All


Valentine’s Day is a bitter-sweet  holiday. For some it is an amazing day to spend with the people who love you, while for others it is a difficult day.

The difficulty can come from a variety of reasons, but no matter what the reason is, pain is pain and it is real.

To those of you who find this day difficult, look to God for your strength because He truly loves you unconditionally. He loves everything about you! You are beautiful… you are enough. You always will be to Him.

Honoring My Dad’s Memory

D2E89B84-2578-4BCE-90FA-CC31FE178EA8I am writing today with a heavy heart because it marks the 10 year anniversary of my sweet dad’s death.

It doesn’t seem possible that my dad has been gone for so long. He seems so alive in my heart, my mind, and my thoughts. Not a day goes by without thinking of him or saying something that he would find funny or finding myself using one of his many beloved phrases.

I absolutely love the times when God blesses me with someone who either looks like him or has his same mannerisms. I never take these moments for granted. I feel so blessed for the brief encounter, as I feel like I have spent that time with my dad. I am sure that seems weird, but I believe God meets our specific needs in life in mysterious ways. I may not even realize I needed that moment with my dad, but I never walk away without feeling thankful for it.

I can remember one day vividly when God gave me one of these brief moments in the grocery store last year. I was having a tough day and I was in the produce isle. I had noticed this sweet gentleman who had the same stocky figure wearing a flannel shirt similar to what my dad would have worn. As I noticed his face, my bewilderment only grew deeper. Oh my gosh, he had the same hair color, the same hair cut and similar glasses to what my dad had worn. No, this couldn’t be possible? This man looked so much like my dad, he could have been a twin.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I completely lost focus on what I was doing and discretely watched him in complete amazement. As I continued to watch him, I learned that not only did he look like my dad, but even had the same gentle mannerisms. All I could do was thank God for my brief encounter with my dad.

It was a moment in life I could never have planned for, hoped for, but yet God allowed me to experience and I will always hold that experience in my heart as a sweet memory and moment in time.

My friend, you may never know how you will touch or impact someone else’s life because He places people in our lives and we may never even know it. This gentleman will never know how much he touched my heart that day in the produce isle of a grocery store. Likewise, the sweet nurse at my dad’s nursing home will never know how much she touched mine and my mom’s heart the day she left a fresh white rose on my dad’s bed.

See, what you don’t know about my story is that my dad had to be put into a nursing home because he was having debilitating seizures as a result of his traumatic brain injury he sustained during the Vietnam War. This brain injury brought on early onset dementia and as the years went on, my dad forgot who I was, except for the last day I saw him. There was a moment on his last day that he looked at me and called me by the nick name he had given me when I was a child. I will never forget that sweet moment. God blessed me with this special time because I could never have asked or wished for it.

When we left him we knew he wasn’t doing well, but my mom wasn’t prepared to stay the night because she didn’t have her own medicine she would have needed to take that night and even the next day, so we knew choosing to rent a hotel room to stay with him wasn’t an option that day. Mom lived an hour and half away from him to include you had to drive through the mountains to get to there. Where mom lived, it could be raining, but during the winter months, you could encounter a severe snow storm going through the mountains, which is what happened that night to us after we got home. The weather forecast the night after we left my dad was for not only a snow storm but an ice storm too. Unfortunately, the forecast stood true. When we got up this morning 10 years ago my mom received a phone call from my dad’s nurse to tell her it was only a matter of time before he passed and there was nothing we could do. Had it only stayed a snow storm we would have trekked through the snow and the mountains to get to my dad, but with the ice, it was too dangerous. We couldn’t, we just couldn’t get back to my dad. It breaks my heart to have not been with him the day he died, but we couldn’t risk our lives to get back there. Thankfully, God knew our hearts and He knew we would have been there if we could have been. I believe He knew that which is why not only did we have a snowstorm, but God stepped up the storm making it an ice storm too. He knew we would have attempted to get through the snow storm to get to my dad.

This is why we didn’t get back to the nursing home to find that precious white rose until the day after my dad died. To the nurse who went above and beyond your job by leaving that pretty white rose on my dad’s bed for my mom, thank you! Your thoughtfulness to think of this will be forever embedded in my heart.

As I am remembering my dad today, my encouragement is to remind you that life is precious and valuable. If you still have your parents consider going to them today and give them a hug and tell them you love and appreciate them. If you are like me, and you don’t live close to them, try calling and tell them this same thing.

If you do not have your parents any longer consider this simple thought as you are out and about living your life and possibly doing something as mundane as running errands, you will never know how much your actions or gestures could touch someone else’s life. People are always watching us, even though you likely will never know it. Be mindful today of your actions whether they are with your family or friends or total strangers. Allow God to use you today to touch someone’s life. You may never know it, but you could leave a lasting impact on someone today so allow yourself to be that blessing God has planned for someone else.

Love is Not Domination, It is Cultivation

To love someone means to…

  • Help them when you see them struggling.
  • Give them a secure place where judgement is withheld.
  • Support their ideas and encouragement them to go beyond their limitations.
  • Hold their hand when they think everyone is against them.
  • Show them unconditional trust so they know you will have their back when everyone else has left them.
  • Protect them as best as you can against forces that strike against them whether by society, people, organizations, and/or jobs.
  • Show them empathy when no one else understand them.
  • Lastly, love them unconditionally!

This is is by no means an extensive list, but it is enough to cause you to think about your own.

Many of these may be out of your control or power, but I can assure you, if your loved one knows you are trying to do things, they will feel your love.

Did you notice what I did as I looked back over these? Each begins with an action verb. This spoke volumes to me.

To love someone means to be continually performing an action for them and requires continuous work. Do not sit idle and assume they feel your love. You will find if you do, your loved one will begin to feel cold against you and your love will dwindle down to nothing over time.

Loving someone shouldn’t feel like work. You should want to be there and do things for this person. If you are showing them the love you have for them, they will feel compelled to do the same for you. Then you will see the results of a healthy relationship.

My friend, cultivate your relationship. Do not dominate it. 

Domination over anyone does not contribute positively to any relationship you have let alone for the person you love.

Love unconditionally and you will be amazed at how sweet your relationship will be as long as they do the same thing in return.

Do not sit idle my friend, give your loved one the attention they deserve for you to love them.
